About the Role

The Client Services Engineer role is highly technical and requires in-depth problem solving. Team members work very closely with our Engineering teams to provide support for licensees of Riak, help guide customers in software and hardware deployment, develop educational material for users, and deliver training and professional services. The entire company is focused on providing customers with unparalleled support. The users that we support are Software Engineers and Operations staff working at Silicon Valley startups, Fortune 100 companies, and other leading organisations around the globe.

You should have a strong aptitude for troubleshooting. You will be investigating issues that involve previously unseen edge cases, or perhaps behavior exposed by someone pushing the envelope beyond the limits of any previous engineer. Digging in to the source code or evaluating a network stack to understand how things work or why things aren’t working should sound fun to you.

  • Work directly with customers and the community to answer questions and solve problems.
  • Conduct training: remote and on-site.

  • Provide technical pre-sales assistance to the business development team.
  • Create educational material: documentation, training, demo apps, etc.
  • Identify, reproduce and document product bugs.
  • Invent new ways to improve our company and products.
  • Speak at Riak meetups and industry events.


  • Proven commercial operations or developer experience (3+ years).
  • Competent in *NIX system administration.
  • Competent in one of Java, Python, Ruby or Erlang.
  • A good sysadmin or developer, driven by pride in a job well done.
  • Someone who enjoys training and helping people.
  • An excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing.
  • Happy to regularly travel (up to 25% of the month) throughout the EU.
  • No more than 1 month’s notice period in your existing role.
  • Located in the Greater London region.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with writing / editing technical documentation.
  • Experience providing technical training.
  • Previously used NoSQL, Graph or “big-data” solutions.
  • Experience with distributed systems.
  • Familiar with virtualisation platforms.
  • Experience with configuration management tools.
  • A Github account.
  • Involvement with other Open Source projects.
  • Experience with a second programming language.
